Experiment - Does light make plants give off oxygen?

What you need:

  • Filter Funnel
  • Trough of water
  • Test tube
  • Elodea or other pond weed

What to do:

  1. Place the pond weed under the funnel in the trough. Leave for a few days.


  2. Leave for a few days under bright lights.
  3. Stopper the test tube under water.
  4. Test for oxygen with a glowing splint.

Further investigation

  • Try adding potassium bicarbonate to the water
  • Try with light of different intensity. You can tell if there is a change by the rate of bubbles
  • Try with different colour light
